Hellenic Precinct redevelopment reaches exciting milestone

16 January 2023

The Hellenic Club of Canberra has reached an exciting milestone with the submission of three development applications (DAs) for The Hellenic Precinct redevelopment.

The Hellenic Precinct is the Club’s blueprint for an exciting and diversified future that also pays homage to its rich history in the Woden Town Centre.

The Hellenic Club is a Canberra institution with over 40 years of strong community engagement and participation. The Club has grown from its modest beginnings serving the ACT Greek community into a club with over 50,000 members and a proud reputation of providing high quality facilities and services for all Canberrans.

To futureproof the Club, the Hellenic Club Board and management team commissioned a new master plan for the Club’s Woden site that will deliver a truly unique mixed-use proposition to the Woden Town Centre.

Following early engagement with the Woden Valley Community Council (WVCC) and the National Capital Design Review Panel (NCDRP), the Club engaged the internationally renowned teams at Fender Katsalidis Architects and OCULUS to progress the concepts through to detailed design, with the DAs for the precinct now on notification.

The updated proposal includes:

• publicly accessible roofed ‘Agora’ with a central circulation space

• a grand entrance via a porte-cochere off Bowes Street;

• commercial spaces on the ground and the first floor level, including:

• restaurants and shops

• indoor recreation facilities

• health facility

• bar

• an auditorium

• a 12-storey hotel with 151 rooms, associated conference rooms, restaurants, rooftop guest space with a pool

• a 16-storey office building with NLA of 27,496m2

• four (4) levels of basement parking

• temporary ground floor and loading dock parking, including 157 parking spaces (11 of which are accessible)

• end-of-trip facilities, and

• a high-quality landscaped interface to the surrounding streets.

“We have held true to our focus on a non-residential development and identified multiple commercial anchors to drive foot traffic and visitation to our site and the broader Town Centre,” said Mr Andrew Satsias, Hellenic Club Board President.

“This includes elevated entertainment, dining, social and commercial spaces that will attract local, national and international visitors”.

“Having had very constructive engagement with WVCC and the NCDRP to date, we look forward to feedback from the broader community through our formal DA notification”.

Members and guests are encouraged to learn more about the project and provide feedback via the Hellenic Precinct Display that will be set up in our Woden Foyer over the next two weeks, or via our website below.
