Help us Light Up the Dawn this Anzac Day

14 April, 2020

Help us Light Up the Dawn this Anzac Day.

Anzac Day is a special day for all Australians, and while we’re sad we can’t welcome the Canberra community through our doors this year, we still want to get involved in helping you commemorate the sacrifices of our armed service members.

That’s why we’re asking you to help us Light Up the Dawn by creating your own Poppy Lantern for us to use in our virtual driveway Dawn Service to be broadcast on our Facebook page next Saturday 25th April.

If you’d like to get involved, simply drop yours off on your next visit to our contactless Drive-Thru by next Friday 24th April for us to light up on the day, or send us a photo of you with your lantern at home for us to use in a virtual Anzac Day collage with all of our members. Then join us in holding your own dawn service from the safety of your driveway at 6am on Anzac Day.

The lanterns can be created using recycled milk cartons or jars, and are a great little project if you’re in self-isolation! Find out more on how to create your own below.

Please note our virtual Dawn Service will not be an event open to the public.

How to create our own.

Using recycled milk cartons
The easiest way to create your own Poppy Lantern is using recycled milk cartons. Preferably using 2 litre cartons, just cut the top third of the carton off and decorate with poppys using permanent markers, paint, paper cut-outs or even knit your own and stick on. To help weigh it down place a small amount of sand or rice in the bottom (optional), then place a tealight candle in the bottom for light.

Using recycled glass jarsYou can also follow the same process above to create your own lantern using recycled jars. It doesn’t matter what size, just ensure all labelling is removed to make it easier to apply the poppy decorations and let the light shine through.
